Survival rate and life expectancy of Stage 4 colon cancer

Survival rate and life expectancy of Stage 4 colon cancer?
My best friends mother found out 3 weeks ago she had stage 4 colon cancer they did surgery yesterday, she removed part of her small intestine and all of her female organs, b/c it had spread to there...He didn't remove the lymph nodes around that area b/c he said it didn't matter...He says he can't tell us anything until he gets results back from some test. He said this is a very aggressive cancer and she would have to fight it very aggressive with chemo. We kept trying to ask him questions but he said he could not answer them at this point. We just want to know what we are facing, can she beat this? What is the best case scenerio? If the chemo doesn't respond, then what? How long do we have w/her...weeks, months, years....will it return....so many questions...no answers....we just want someone to shoot it to us straight....if you can help i would greatly appreciate it...

There are unexpected miracles and I would not tell my friend anything bad, but the life expectancy with a colon cancer this advanced in in weeks or months at best.

So sorry to hear this, my prayers to you all...First, there are many types of cancer. Is it small or large cell. Small cell cancer depending you can live three to fourteen months. Large cell is a slower cancer in most cases. Much success in colon cancer if found in early stages. They will do testing to see if the cancer has mastisized or not...As hard as it seems a positive attitude and diet and lots of prayers are most important. God Bless you all and stay strong.

My mom passed away from Colon cancer in 2000. When she was diagnosed with this, it had already spread to the liver... She was given 6 mo. to live... She started on Chemo... 6 mo. went by... 1 yr went by and she was still here fighting with cancer... She made it through two yrs... when the dr. had only given her 6 mo.. i could say that although she was on chemo an knowing that her days were counted... she lived comfortably.. untill the last two months... Everyones situation is diffrent.... dr. can give you an about life span, but it is not always correct...

I do know of chemoangels, it isn't quite on the level of Make a Wish, but they hook you up with an 'angel' who can send you packages and cards to help you through the chemo process. Best of luck to you...

Until they die.

Hi L I would post this question in curezone.com You'll get more experienced answers. Best of health to you Cheers
3 :
not to sound negative but with any cancer you can never go on the "expected" lenght of time they have. look at them like every day is their last. this is just from personal experience with several relatives.
4 :
my husband had colon cancer in2003. when the dr found it ,they had to do surgery on him they took out 18 inches of intestence. which means he has no way of going to the bath room with out a colopsy bag, they said you normaly live around two years with it so whoever has it ,it is best to have it removed, and it also depends on how long they had it.after the surgery he is back to work and doing every thing he has always done, good luck, go see a dr. asap
5 :
not as long as they would without it

I would suggest that you read the article by Stephen Jay Gould titled 'The Median isn't the Message' about cancer and statistics. Gould had abdominal mesothelioma and when he asked his doctor for literature to read about it, he was told there was nothing interesting that he would find. He went ahead anyway and discovered that abdominal mesothelioma was considered a terminal disease. At best he had 8 months to live. Gould, an intellectual, set about figuring out what his real chances as individual were against such a brutal statistic. What he discovered was that despite the poor prognosis that in his individual case he had a much better chance at surviving. What he learned was that statistics do not tell the whole story. Gould went on to live another 20 years before dying from a secondary cause. Someone with a stage 3 colon cancer has a chance at remission. A chance at life. There is always hope.
7 :
Today, it is anyones guess but longer then yesterday. People have recovered from all stages.
8 :
5 year survival rate occur in 30 - 65% of patient
9 :
Best guess is 5 years with the appropriate care. It could be more or less however.
10 :
I had stage three colon cancer, it was a real pain in the butt, I went 30 radiation treatments and two seperate rounds of chemo. That was six years ago, and I don't plan on going anywhere soon. Every case is different, people I got to know through my experience did not make it. Cancer is a real devistating thing for anyone to go through. I found that being spiritual, and asking God for his help, gave me the strength to survive.

Some earlier studies have indicated that patients with inflammatory bowel disease, especially those with long-standing and extensive ulcerative colitis, have an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Moreover, others in tertiary care centres have suggested that patients with Crohn's disease also have a higher risk of colorectal cancer. Canadian data on colorectal cancer in Crohn's disease appear to be limited. For this investigation, a single clinician database of 877 patients with Crohn's disease was used. Altogether, there were six patients with colorectal cancer (ie, overall rate of 0.7%). All of these patients were men with an initial diagnosis of Crohn's disease established at a mean age of approximately 28 years, with either ileocolonic disease or colonic disease alone, but not with ileal disease alone. Although there was a predominance of women in the overall study population (ie, 56.1%), no women developed colorectal cancer. The clinical behaviour of Crohn's disease was classified as nonstricturing in all six patients with colorectal cancer, but in two patients, Crohn's disease was complicated by a perirectal abscess or a fistula. All cancers were located in the rectum and were diagnosed 30 years, 22 years, seven years, 18 years, 20 years and 40 years after Crohn's disease was initially diagnosed. In three patients, the cancer was detected in a residual rectal stump after a partial colon resection at least 10 years earlier. In five patients, localized extension of disease through the serosa, nodal or distant metastases (ie, liver, lung) was found at the time of cancer diagnosis; two patients have since died. The present study confirms that Crohn's disease involving the colon may be a possible risk factor for the development of colorectal cancer, at least in younger men, but, in this study, not in women. However, part of this increased risk in men may have been related to the presence of a rectal stump, rather than to Crohn's disease per se. you can get more information on this issue from this site http://cancer-care-center.blogspot.com/

I think i may have either an enlarged colon or colon cancer or maybe IBS?
Um. Constipated a lot. Helps when I drink like energy drinks that get my bowels moving. Otherwise I usually don't get bowel movements. Um. I am bloated a lot. Urinate more than i should at times. A lot of times after Im done pooping. Pinching feeling. Hard to start urinating at times. I don't know what else Im leaving out but... I'm 21 years old and have had these symptoms for a while now.

It looks like a simple case of constipation, as you did not mention blood in stools, pain etc. Try eating more fiber rich foods like beans, fruits, vegetables, bran, other cereals, etc. If you want long term relief, you might want to reduce animal products ( especially dairy/cheese ) intake. That is the cause of constipation.

I do not think so. Only old man get that.
2 :
still highly unlikely. noone can say for sure unless you check at a doctor
3 :
It's rare but not unheard of. I recommend you get in to see a doctor ASAP.
4 :
Go to the doctor. Anyway even if you have the symptoms it may totally be something else. So, as i said visit your doctor and get it checked out properly. It's probably nothing or just minor. However, you could get cancer at any age but it is very unlikely. You are probably just anxious or something or have hypochondria or sumthin. Hope that helps! :)
5 :
no i dont think so
6 :
yeah, but if you do then put this in past tense, other wise just present tense, you should drink more Cranberry juice!
7 :
if your family has a history of cancer, it is possible. still, you need to be checked by a doctor.
8 :
It would be unusual; 80% of cases are in people over 60. That's the trouble with looking up symptoms, suddenly we have them all. Most of the symptoms of colon cancer can also be due to other causes - the most common cause of bleeding, for example, is piles. But if you're worried you should see a doctor. Checking your family history won't help btw, unless it turns out several family members have had colon cancer. Fewer than 10% of all cancer cases - all types- are hereditary, and in the case of colon cancer it's 5%
9 :
My nephew just had his colon removed. Not cancer -perforated-would have beensays Dr.He had ulcerative colitis 3 yrs ago and was taking meds still. He drinks a lot of alcohol, mostly beer.He is now 31 yrs old. Please see a doctor and get an MRI. At least you will know or ease your mind.
10 :
Of course it is possible. but statistically the risk of developing colon cancer increases with age. Most cases occur in the 60s and 70s, while cases before age 50 are uncommon unless a family history of early colon cancer is present.
11 :
Dont research online for symptoms...it just causes anxiety. Just go to a doctor to be sure. Probably not even cancer, im 19 too and i used to worry about my health a lot. I once had a lump in my testicle and thought i had cancer. Turned out to be hernia. Just go to a doctor. :)
12 :
It is rare, but yes it is possible. It can happen. I was diagnosed last year when I was 20. And was told it was there for a couple of years at least. And i have no family history of it. If you have symptoms, do not ignore it. Go to your doctor, and keep going back until whatever problem you have is sorted.
13 :
My wife was recently at a cancer survivor meeting. They were fortunate to have a colon cancer surgeon as a guest speaker.. Someone asked him,. " what was the youngest cancer patient you have ever seen." Would you promise to see a doctor if the answer was "19."?
14 :
You should go to the doctor just in case. My aunt was diagnosed at age 35 but they had estimated she had had it for about 5 to 10 years. Please do not hesitate going to the doctor! It is a VERY treatable cancer if it is detected early.

Can severe constipation over time cause colon cancer

Can severe constipation over time cause colon cancer?
If so please explain how.

1 :
Cancer is linked to inflammation, and constipation causes inflammation. If you have this problem, it won't automatically cause cancer, but it will increase the risk.
2 :
Constipation can cause diverticulosis and eventual diverticulitis. No it does not cause cancer. Diverticulosis is from the muscle wall squeezing so hard on the constipated stool, little sacs of colon sqeeze through cracks in the muscle wall and eventually form sacs outside of the muscle wall... they can get inflammed and then it is called diverticulitis. Increase the amount of fiber in your diet. switch from white bread to whole wheat. Add metamucil or some other fiber supplement if you are concerned about constipation.
3 :
Constipation cannot cause cancer. It does however cause hemorrhoids which can rupture and cause bleeding and if that happens could cause severe infection. Please get to your doctor and change your diet to make sure your eatting plenty of fiber to get rid of the problem.
