Colon or colorectal cancer can be detected by blood tests, colonoscopy/ sigmoidoscopy, using dye and X-rays to make a picture of your colon (double contrast barium enema) and using multiple CT images to create a picture of your colon. CT or MRI scans of the abdomen, pelvic area, chest, or brain may be used to stage the cancer. Sometimes, PET scans are also used. * Family history and some dietary factors increase a person's risk of colorectal cancer. * Typical symptoms include bleeding during a bowel movement, fatigue, and weakness. * Screening tests are important for people over 50. * Colonoscopy is often used to make the diagnosis. * Cancer that is caught early is most curable. * Surgery is usually performed to remove the cancer.

Colon Cancer Awareness

Colon Cancer Awareness?
I am doing a study on Colon Cancer Awareness. I am comparing awareness at a local level to a national scale. Since the local percentage is probably lower than the national, I designed my survey in such a way that could suggest that the reason for the lower percentage would be because of lack of awareness. Based on this, what would be my independent and dependent variables?

I'm a LITTLE confused by your question- it sounds like your hypothesis ("reason") is that the lower local percentage of colon cancer awareness is caused by... lack of awareness. Not a very interesting hypothesis, being circular and all. But perhaps you mean to simply test whether local awareness actually IS lower than it is nationally? In that case, your dependent variable would be some measure of awareness gathered from your survey, and the independent variable would be location (local vs. non-local). You would have to administer your survey to both both local and non-local populations. It's best to really tightly pin down exactly what the hypothesis is that you want to test. This will help you identify the dependendant variables (outcomes) and the independent variables (the factors you think may be affecting the outcome).

If you have Crohn's Disease, how likely are you to have Colon Cancer

If you have Crohn's Disease, how likely are you to have Colon Cancer?
please let me know!! i have crohn's disease and i was wondering...im pretty worried.

The likelihood of someone having cancer is not based on a single factor. Having Crohn's Disease is a risk factor for colon cancer and nothing more. It increases your risk by 1.5 to 2 times.
2 :
I am a Crohn's patient and a pharmacist. But I like to integrate alternative and holistic approach into conventional treatment therapies. The risk of developing colon cancer increases in cases when Crohn's is not being treated. Also, having active Crohn's disease (flare up stage) that is not controlled increases the risk of developing colon cancer. No reason to worry if you stay proactive and do all that you possibly can to stay healthy. Eat healthy and slowly, exercise, meditate, get enough fresh air and enough vitamin D from sunshine, drink only filtered water with mineral content and take natural supplements for inflammation if possible with your current treatment. You can read more about natural supplements for Crohn's disease: http://www.journey-with-crohns-disease.com/natural-supplements.html Bottom line, the risk of colon cancer only increases when there's a chronic inflammation, if there's no chronic inflammation, the risk should be about the same as an average person without Crohn's disease.

Colon Cancer Could I Have It... Help

Colon Cancer Could I Have It... Help?
Could I have colon cancer? I am only 18. There is a family history. My stools have been black or blacker, and I sometimes see little peices. Also I they have been thinner. I don't feel any pain. I am worried because I have known people that have died from the disease. Thanks

Collect a sample, take it to the Dr, get a diagnosis. There is no other way to know.
2 :
A black, tar like, or "coffee ground" consistency in your stool indicates a bleed within the stomach. Have you been taking aspirin over a long period of time? Pepto Bismal? The aspirin can cause internal bleeding and is serious. The Pepto just causes a black stool and is nothing to worry about. Take this seriously and see your doctor.
3 :
Definitely see your doctor. Black or tarry stools are an indicator of stomach/small intestine bleeding, which could just mean you have an ulcer or something worse. You need to get it checked out just in case. Doctors can treat colon cancer, but only if it's caught early. Another thing to do until you can get in to see your doctor is check with your local pharmacist. He/she can tell you if there is increased bleeding risk or interactions between any meds you may take. For example, taking PeptoBismol can make your stools black--it's right there on the label. That doesn't mean you should just shove your anxieties aside and not go to the doctor, but like I said, a pharmacist is a widely untapped resource, and they have a wealth of information.

Colon Cancer Question

Colon Cancer Question?
I am 16 and I was wondering if it is possible for me to colon cancer.I have had some symptoms and am worried.I had blood in my last bowel movement, though nothing was unusual about it besides that.I also had been feeling a little bloated before that, but i hadn't had a bowel movement for around 2 days(that might have something to do with it).I have had blood in my stool before, but I never have really felt bloated.what do you think?

1 :
It sounds as though you are straining during evacuation of the bowel. Constipation often leads to hemorhoids, and they bleed.
2 :
you need to go to DR, but you are 16 years old it make thing mach more better. blood is not only symptoms for colon cancer.but the best thing you can do is go to Doctor ASAP. collon cancer patient
3 :
It could be just piles or IBS or at the worst ulcerated colitis but as you do not have any severe pain then thats unlikely.
4 :
Colon cancer is unlikely at your age, but it's always a good idea to check out blood in the stool. Get it checked but don't worry.
5 :
Tim, at your age, blood in the stool is just not acceptable. It more than likely is not colon cancer and again at your age you should not be having hemorrhoids. It sounds repetitious, but you really do need to see a doctor and get a professional diagnosis of what is causing the bleeding. For your peace of mind and future good health please make an appointment. You know you are going to worry about it until you do. Get checked and find out it is something totally simple and easily fixed and not the beast of cancer!

Colon cancer and questions

Colon cancer and questions.?
I have some questions bout colon cancer. How does this disease Develop? how common is this disease what possibilities are there for recovery? what treatments will be necessary and what is the survival rate for patients with this disease
Cancer - 2 Answers

1 :
No one is exactly sure of how colon cancer is caused, but a logical way to help prevent against colon cancer is to include more fiber in your diet. Recovery rate is very possible with the right surgery, radiation, or chemotherapies. However, it depends what stage of cancer it is, the grade of the tumor and if it has spread or not and these factors will determine survival rate, recovery rate and what treatments will be necessary. Hope this helps and good luck! Anything is beatable with hope.
2 :
Causes, genetic and /or bad diet. Smoking, too much alcohol, too much fast food/junk food, fatty foods too much red meat, smoked foods, amines. Sometimes but not always colon cancer is genetic, caused by mutation in the gene Ras, that controls cell division. This mutation is passed down through family. So if it is defective cells can't stop dividing and you get a tumor. For the tumor to develop and spread several other genes must be corrupted too. The cancer cells must also evade the immune system. The tumor often spreads to nearby lymph nodes and to liver and brain. This is metastasis. Once it has spread treatment gets much more difficult. The initial primary tumor can be removed by surgery followed by radio and chemo-therapy. Distant spread requires radio and chemo and surgery. But sadly once it has gone to liver or brain there is not so much hope. Primary tumors found early have a good survival rate. Symptoms are redness and blood when you go to bathroom, constipation diarrohea, pain in abdomen, IBS symptoms, weight loss. You can get tested to see if you carry the gene causing colon cancer. Otherwise eat healthy, take exercise. Eat lots of organic fruit and vegatbles vitamins. The spice cumin found in curries is said to help prevent (not cure) colon cancer.

hemmoroid

Might be hemorrhoids. If your that worried about it go to a doctor.
3 :
Well, the only thing you can do is tell your parents and they'll take you to a doctor... you're not getting anywhere talking about it on a website.
4 :
You may have pulled a muscle, or have a zit that is deep in the skin. Have your mother take you to the doctors. You are only 13, I don't think that you have anything to worry about...does cancer run in your family??
5 :
see a dr. asap and get checked out.
6 :
That sounds a lot like hemorrhoids. Definitely doesn't sound like colon cancer. Don't worry too much. You can buy creams and such for it. It would be smart to have a doctor check it out though, which will be VERY pleasant.

Studies have concluded that drinking alcohol can increase the risk colon cancer. In particular, drinking beer can increase the risk of developing cancer. This is believed to be caused by the cancer causing nitrosamines which are present in beer. but it was found that drinking a glass of wine a week can help or protect agains the disease. I work at a clinic and one of our clients had a punctured colon and the doc told her to drink wine. good luck
2 :
well i am not sure about colon cancer but it can definitely cause liver and lung cancer if you have any suspicion i would definitely stop!!
