It's possible but VERY rare. It's most likely just how your body is made. Try adding alot of fiber to your diet and lots of natural sugars like fruits. Also apple juice helps a great deal! If you feel like you have a problem that needs medical attention, by all means, see a doctor but most likely you don't have cancer : )

Large intestine is known as colon. It is a lower part of our digestive system. It is an approximately four feet long and tube shaped organ. Colon cancer is a disease in which cancer cells generates in the colon. The rectum is the last part of the colon adjoining to the anus. The large intestine (colon) is part of the body's digestive system. The digestive system removes and process nutrients from foods and passes waste substance out of the body. The digestive systems have four parts: esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine (colon). First four to six feet long part of large intestine is called Colon. The last 6 inches are the rectum and the anal canal. The anal canal ends at the anus. Symptoms of Colon Cancer: Colon cancer in primary stage, don’t show the any symptom. Symptoms of the colon cancer depend on the types, stage and location. Signs and symptoms of Colon cancer include: A change in the constancy of stool Blood in stool Cramps, gas or pain Pain with a bowel movement A sensitivity that your bowel doesn't vacant completely Weakness or tiredness Weight loss

People can have cancer at any age, even babies get it. But cancer is rare in young people & you don't really have any obvious sign. like bleeding which would be a concern. Being constipated can be a problem but dietary changes might help as could taking a stool softened like colace (over the counter pill) daily which might help regulate you.Unless you have other symptoms, like stomach pains & vomiting though, I doubt that cancer is your problem. Stop worrying & try to adjust your diet or try the colace & see if it helps. Good luck.

Ascites with Colon Cancer

Ascites with Colon Cancer?
My uncle has had colon cancer for about 6 months. Now he has had ascites drained twice within the last month. Is this a symptom of worsening disease or mets? He thinks maybe the doctor messed up doing his colon resection, but I do not agree with him? Any ideas?

The ascites, the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity, can be due to multiple reasons. The top on my list would be poor nutrition. The patient may be unable to absorb enough electrolytes if the colon is too short. Yes, there may also be liver malfunction. Also maybe due to poor nutrition, hepatits, alcoholic liver disease and yes a possibllity of metastases to the liver that may be causing end stage liver disease. Your uncle needs to discuss with his doctor his concerns and get appropriate answers for himself.
2 :
First off, if he is having ascites frequently after surgery, he probably should be checked out by another doctor. It could mean that some cancer was missed, or it has already metastasized into the liver. It could be a complication of surgery. But either way, he needs to be checked out again.
3 :
It's hard to say from your description what is going on with your uncle. I would discuss this with the doctor who has all the available facts. I can tell you what happened with my 17 year old son. He was diagnosed with a rare abdominal sarcoma. By the time he was diagnosed he was already stage IV with multiple masses. His primary tumor had 'wept' and seeded hundreds of tumors onto his diaphragm and the walls of the abdomen. This process irritates the walls of the abdomen causing an accumulation of fluid called ascites. He was fortunate as he was able to eliminate 30 pounds of the fluid with a diuretic. But he was extremely bloated in the abdomen and fluid in the legs and ankles. As a secondary health issue he also developed blood clots during this episode. Ascites can be very uncomfortable for the patient, but they can drain it or use a diuretic. Unfortunately, in many abdominal cases the fluid can return. What I know about advanced cases is that this can indicate a progression of disease. It's hard to say though with your uncle. My son was able to undergo high dose chemo, 2 surgeries, and has come a long, long way since he was first diagnosed. He also underwent an experimental surgery called intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemoperfusion to address the small and microscopic disease on the diaphragm and in the abdomen. The added benefit to hyperthermic chemoperfusion is that it also treats ascites. Do asians get colon cancer

Do asians get colon cancer?
My girlfriend is from Northern China. Recently she has been having a host of weird bowel symptoms: narrow, soft stools, with mucus, constipation, diarrea, etc. She does not admit to any blood in her stool though. I told she should get a colonoscopy, but she told me that asians don't get colon cancer, only blacks and whites are at risk. Is this true? She is 19 by the way.

Anyone from anywhere can get any kind of cancer. Your girlfriend needs to stop thinking that her race is special. Anyway, yes, they can get colon cancer. Less common, sure, but still possible. Diet and lifestyle relate more to risk of colon cancer than race. That said, it would be unusual at 19. She should go to a doctor regardless.
2 :
yes she can get colon cancer.she probably believes the chinese diet in china mainly rice and fish and fresh fruits and veg.but a chinese person living on an american diet is just as vulnerable.it sounds like maybe irritable bowel syndrome.here are the symptoms Diarrhea: Loose stools - especially chronic or recurrent - are a primary sign of IBIS. •Constipation: Conversely, constipation is also a symptom of IBIS. •Changes in bowels: Any change at all - whether chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation or both - can be a sign of IBIS. •Stomach pain: Many IBIS sufferers report stomach pain. The quality of the pain varies, and may be dull, cramp, sharp or reminiscent of gas pains. •Abnormal stool: Any type of unusual stool - such as a watery, discolored or lumpy stool - may be a symptom of IBIS. •Other symptoms: Some IBIS sufferers also report signs such as heartburn, and women are more predisposed then men.in any event she needs to go to the doctor get diagnosed and medicine.no one knows for sure what causes it some think stress others think hormones, how ever certain diet changes can help. if she doesn't get help she will eventually isolate herself from the public paranoid and depressed an attack will occur.you are a good friend for caring and trying to get er help.i would go online and learn about it and try to convince her that way...http://www.medicinenet.com/irritable_bowel_syndrome/article.htm
3 :
Kinda odd that you're checking out her poop. It sounds like ibs or colitis, not cancer. The mucous is a big clue.
4 :
Ha! anyone can get colon cancer or any cancer for that matter. Here is something to know about your stool and your colon. If her stool is thin and long... (think a snake) consistantly then she most likely has a problem with her colon. It is very rare for a 19 yr old to have colon cancer. If she is really worried then she needs to get checked

Nothing to worry about, if they find something, maybe.
2 :
It's colonoscopy. Colonostomy is where they surgically open a hole to your colon and put a bag there. So, a colonoscopy is where they take the light and look at your colon through your.... ya know. But, don't worry about anything. You'll come out just fine! It's not a big deal to have one done.
3 :
The colonoscopy is nothing to fear, it will be performed by a surgeon, who will first sedate you somewhat to reduce discomfort. They will have you lie on your side and insert a lighted scope which they can instantly view to determine if your have any pollups or other areas of concern. If you do have pollups they are removed at this time and then sent to a lab for biopsy. The result are usually back in 7-10 days. The procedure itself has no lasting effects other than you may be a bit gassy for a day.
4 :
I'm assuming you meant colonoscopy. I haven't been through this but I have done this to many patients. Colonoscopy is God's gift to diagnosis of colon cancer. A tube with a camera will be inserted and you will be able to see the insides of your intestines in the monitor. They can get a biopsy by making a pinch from the scope and you will not feel it. One of the risks include perforation in the intestines, sometimes when they biopsy accidents happen when the intestines wall may get a tiny wee hole that can cause air to go into your system, thats why it is done by a highly skilled endoscopist. Other than that, the benefits outweigh the risk if you are highly suspected of cancer. It will not cause problems for you later in life, it's a simple procedure done only by experts. Your bowels will have to be cleansed by various ways such as enemas, castor oil etc, depends on your doc a day before the procedure. Please do not worry about the procedure, it is safe, a little bit uncomfy but they can give anesthesia so that you wont feel the scope going in. For now, eat high fiber foods. Hope it helps.

Could it be colon cancer

Could it be colon cancer?
I'm a healthy 42 year old who recently has been having rectal bleeding (3-4 days every 2-3 months) my doctor has ordered a colonoscopy in a few days. I had had blood work done about a week ago. My question is...If I had colon cancer, wouldn't the blood work show something abnormal in my red blood cells, white blood cells ect?.. because everything came out normal.
Cancer - 4 Answers

1 :
Your red count would be low if you were loosing a lot of blood. There are other blood tests for cancer, but the colonoscopy will give a definitive answer. Just wait for the results.
2 :
Yes. The doctor wants to do the colonoscopy because it's an expensive procedure. I believe this and endoscopy is done entirely too much. I have seen on here that even kids are given this procedure. This procedure is for old people! This is why insurance is so expensive. Procedures are ordered that are not necessary. Also, a colonoscopy in a very humiliating and embarrassing procedure. I personally will never agree to this procedure.
3 :
I can't believe what I have read from J above me.I had symptoms similar to yours and reluctantly submitted to a colonoscopy.I was 49.When I woke from it there were several doctors standing around discussing the photos they had taken of the tumor growing in my rectum. The next couple years were filled with long days of regret for not going in sooner.I'll spare the details but it was barely worth living through. To answer your question,no,a blood test will not show anything until it's out of hand and severe. You are doing the right thing and the odds are on your side.
4 :
I have known younger people who had the test and discovered it was nothing more hemorrhoids; but, I have known several your age or younger that were diagnosed with colon cancer or other massive amounts of polyps. The only way you know is to get the test. Unfortunately, there are some people who are afraid to have anyone anyone touch their butt much less put something in their butt. I knew one guy who was convinced that have a colonoscopy would make him gay. There are numerous cases of individuals like this literally scaring themselves to death because they would not get tested and the cancer was not caught early enough. Most likely it's nothing; but, if it is something (even as simple as a precancerous polyp) it could save you life. Get the test done and ignore those who would rather die a painful death than get checked.

IF SOMEONE HAS COLON CANCER THAT IS ALSO IN THE BONES OR HAS SPREAD TO THE BONES

IF SOMEONE HAS COLON CANCER THAT IS ALSO IN THE BONES OR HAS SPREAD TO THE BONES.....?
IF SOMEONE HAS COLON CANCER AND IT IS IN THE BONES OR HAS SPREAD TO THE BONES AND IS GOING THROUGH TREATMENT IS THERE A GOOD CHANCE OF IT BEING CURED?
Cancer - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Once any kind of cancer has reached the bones, that really complicates things. Each case is really individual - please talk to the doctors who are treating the person to get a better idea. Some people live years after cancer gets into their bones.
2 :
Stage four colon cancer - metastatic disease - is not considered a curable disease in current medicine. The therapeutic goal is to buy time as much as possible. Of course, all doctors caring for people are trying to buy time since everyone is mortal, but with colon cancer spread to distant sites it is a matter of buying some additional months - usually not years. It is very unusual for colon adenocarcinomas to spread to the bones. Are you certain that the bone lesions are metastatic colon adenocarcinoma? Prostate cancer, lung cancer or breast adenocarcinomas are far more likely to spread to the bones than a colon carcinoma. If this is breast cancer or prostate cancer (you don't say if the person is male or female) there may be responses with hormonal therapy approaches. The oncologist caring for this person should be explaining the situation honestly with the patient and family members entrusted by the patient. The medical oncologist who knows all the details of the case can best make these predictions. We cannot be specific - over the internet - with sketchy information.

Have some fibre and lots of fluids...
2 :
I doubt it's colon cancer, although if you're scared, you could have your doctor do a test. If you're constipated, it's most likely your feces are very hard, and are scraping your internally, causing the little bits of bleeding. I suggest taking in more fiber, or a laxative, and drink lots of water. If you don't get back to regular soon, see your doctor.
3 :
When theres blood, it could be lots of things: an ulcer or a hemorrhoid. There are simple solutions to those problems. An ulcer can occur when you stress. Usually there is lots of blood for severe situations. There is medication for that. See a pharmacist. Hemorrhoids occur from pushing too hard to make the poop come out. There's hemorrhoid cream or they usually heal on there own. I'm not sure the symptoms for colon cancer. But I'm just telling you all this to have you calm down and not worry about such a severe case as cancer.

Colon cancer surgery

Colon cancer surgery?
I will be soon be undergoing surgery for colon cancer at the VA hospital in west los angeles, was looking for people who have knowledge or experience with this procedure at the facility, would appreciate any input you could give me.

1 :
Hi Ed, I have never had the surgery or worked for this facility, but I live in Torrance and know people that have. VA hospitals do not have the best reputation, but the West LA hospital does. You are not telling much about your condition, but the majority of patients have the section of the colon where the tumor is located removed and the two remaining ends are attached to each other. It is kind of like repairing a damaged piece of a garden hose. The surgeon will take a look around to make sure everything else around it looks okay and will check your liver for disease. The tumor will be sent to pathology where it will be staged and lymph nodes will be tested and they should test at least 12 of them. Most patients are in the hospital about 4 days and you should have the results before you are discharged.
2 :
No knowledge of that particular facility. I had colon cancer surgery laproscopically three years ago. No complications, 4 day hospital stay and didn't need pain meds after removal of epidural on day 3. Good Luck!
