Few options left for Dad's colon Cancer

Few options left for Dad's colon Cancer?
Okay so my dad was diagnosed with Colon cancer a year and a half ago. He immedietly had 95% of his large intestine taken out. After the surgery we were all waiting for him to pass gas. This means that the stomach is working. It took two weeks for this to happen. His stomach almost didn't start working and we almost had to put him on a feeding tube. He has to go in for another surgery to get a colonoscopy bag because he had to stop radiation due to it was making his lining too thin. His wbc's are too low for chemo. He is almost refusing surgery because he refuses to live a life on a feeding tube. The doctor said that there is a 80 % chance his stomach won't start up.My dad is only 50 and I need him around. Is there other treatments besides radiation or chemo? What are the chances of his stomach starting back up after surgery.. How does a feeding tube work? can you drink? I am running out of options and know very little about this. Any information is helpful.

He has to go in for another surgery to get a colonoscopy bag The above IS NOT a feeding tube. Nowhere do I see that you mention a feeding tube being inserted. A colonoscopy bag is one which collects waste directly from the small intestine, after digestion. It replaces the bowel and normal BM's are no longer possible. I had an uncle who ate normally and lived for many years with a colonoscopy. I have a Urostomy bag and it is not so terrible to live with. I realize that his situation is different, but he would be surprised the thousands who live with one. One is able to proceed with normal activities when fully recovered. As to a feeding tube, that may be done while he is recovering in the hospital, temporarily. He should be able to eat and drink normally. There many new products for this and they are very satisfactory to use. He will receive ample instructions. It does take a while for the stomach to perform normal digestion after being cleaned out and idle for a few days, but I see no reason why it would not. I experienced that with recent surgery and removal of two feet of my blocked small intestine. My stomach was pumped for several days in the hospital while the intestine healed. He's too young to give up. Good luck and God bless.

Help....colon cancer or not

Help....colon cancer or not?
recently I've been bleeding after I poop and people said that it might be colon cancer. But after I poop my butt get sore so I'm thinking its that a broke a few vessels or something...which explain the blood, should i still be worried about the colon cancer? or can i still think that since i'm sore afterwards it could be something else...i'm still pretty young

it could be a ruptured ulcer, what it ever it is you better get checked by a doc cause the blood loss can cause anemia
2 :
I've heard the same. This has happened to me before.. quit often at times.. but I am just way to scared to ask the doctor to check. Ive gone to the OBGYN and just not asked to get that end checked out. Im horrified. I just assume that its not cancer..because im 23 and my butt gets sore too.. I just assume its hemorrhoids. Good luck... let us know if you go to the doc and tell us what he says.. im curious..
3 :
You may have a fissure - a tear in the anal canal or hemmoroids. In any event, you will have to go to a doctor who after examination will probably prescribe Anusol suppositories - available only from the doctor or by prescription. Also begin stool softeners, now and eat plenty of fiber. Maybe he has some free meds...If you let it go, it could worsen and require surgery.
4 :
You are never too young for colon cancer, so best preventative is to see your doctor, and he may recommend a colonoscopy. It doesn't take long and will put your mind at ease. If they do find something, it will probably be in time to prevent full blown cancer. .
5 :
Honey, you probably have hemorrhoids. Is the blood bright red when you wipe? Colon cancer usually causes a type of bleeding that makes the bowel movement very black and tarry or it will look like coffee grounds. The only definitive way to tell if you have colon cancer is to have a colonoscopy. This is an outpatient procedure done by a gastroenterologist. They put you to sleep and look up your rectum with a camera and they can take a biopsy. I would not immediately jump straight to colon cancer as my first thought. go to your family doc and tell him/her whats going on.
6 :
Is the blood in the stool, or just when you wipe? Is it bright blood or dark old blood? You need to go see a doctor. How regularly are you bleeding? I am a nurse at a hospital and see colon cancer at all different ages so do not just assume because you are young you are immune to getting cancer. Please, go get your self checked out. It may be as simple as hemorrhoids but if it is worth asking and talking about you need to be seen by a MD! Good Luck
7 :
It's probably hemorrhoids, but you should get it checked out. Even a doctor couldnt answer this question on line without seeing you. And you would be foolish to rely on any of our answers.

My friend was diagnosed with brain cancer and colon cancer in 2007, no obvious symptoms despite no treatment

My friend was diagnosed with brain cancer and colon cancer in 2007, no obvious symptoms despite no treatment.?
Is he lying? He only comes up with a symptom when he is in a bind somehow and doesn't go to the doctor at all. He claimed to be in a car accident about a month ago because he went blind while driving, yet no one knows for sure because he went to the hospital alone and no one has seen reports of this accident or hospital stay. How can I be sure?

He sounds like a pathological liar, that's his illness. If he had colon cancer that metastasized to the brain and the lungs and spine on the way up he would most likely be dead after 2 years. He should be wafer thin, look like a ghost, have thin to no hair from all the chemo, and be in bed most of his free time if he really is that sick.He would need to be going to the hospital for blood tests weekly maybe more often. He would be on a restricted diet. You get the picture? Get yourself studied up on this illness then pin him down and make him squirm.
2 :
I think he's FOS too. Anyone that has colon cancer with brain cancer is going to start to deteriorate after no treatment.
3 :
Sounds like BS to me. Bet it smells like BS also. He is lying to you.
4 :
I'm sorry. What is a brain cancer and colon cancer patient supposed to look like and act like? I have brain cancer. You wouldn't know it by looking at me though. I'm 48 and I am on Watch & Wait (W&W). That means that we are waiting for the symptoms to get bad enough again that the benefits of surgery will outweigh the risks. Right now, that's not good. I've already had 1 18 hour surgery, 2 follow-up sinus surgeries and traditional radiation treatment that I maxed out on. Can't ever have any treatment that is associated with radiation. And yet I look the picture of health. I typically go to the doctor once per season to get a renewal of antibiotics to help me combat the various infections that may come my way (usually ear infections). I also go once a season to the ENT doctor to check my ears and sinuses. I also go to the neurologist once a year to have a new MRI and CT Scan done where it is then sent off to my neurosurgeon at the Cleveland (Ohio) Clinic. All this is done in Philadelphia, PA. Before you judge someone, please try to remember that as with most cancers, brain cancer can be benign malignant, as is mine. It means that the tumors themselves are considered benign but due to the many, inoperable locations they are in, it is considered malignant. Many people that are in Stage 1 usually are considered Watch & Wait. Doctors just don't automatically order surgery and unneeded exams and treatments if it won't yield a promising result. Oftentimes, you may be putting the patient at a high risk level that would be better served until waiting when the tumors are larger and easier to spot. Better chance of removing it too. So unless your friend has a habit of being a liar, please, please, please, don't stereotype him according to what you think someone with brain cancer should look and act like.

Can laxative abuse cause colon cancer

Can laxative abuse cause colon cancer??
I'vebeen abusing laxatives for a long time now[not more than 2 years] and i'm scared that i could develop colon cancer. NOTE: and i am aware of having an eating disorder for 5 years now. And i have tried getting help for it and it hasn't worked for me. i always relapse.

Your laxative abuse should not increase your risk of colon cancer, but this is not nearly as much of a concern as your eating disorder. This problem can be very serious. I hope you keep working on this problem with your doctor(s).
2 :
Laxative abuse will not cause cancer, Eat foods high in fiber when you do eat, that will help reduce your chances of getting colon cancer, also have a colonoscopy done. call any oncologist, they have many years of schooling, to become specialist in this type of field .
3 :
I'm sorry to hear about your disorder, but just to let you know, the whole laxative diet does not work. By the time your food hits your stomach and intestines, your body has already absorbed all the nutrients. While the laxatives do make you feel better, you're ultimately beating yourself up for nothing. Keep trying to beat this, relapse is just another step toward remission. It's a long, hard road to follow, but it does require some detours. Let me know if you need any help. I've got some first hand experience with anorexia. Oh and if you get a chance, watch Super Skinny Me on the BBC.

Where are tumors located when you have colon or rectal cancer?
i have been having some lower back pain...minor, and also some minor feelings near the base of my tailbone at the left side of the top of my butt crack...sometimes when i pass gas it sounds different than it usually does. i am expecting a loud sound and a small sound comes out. please help. also, I have never seen any blood in my stool, but sometimes get constipated..but who doesnt?? sometimes reading about this stuff online makes your worrying so much worse :(

I would think that your question is self-explanatory. Tumors for colon cancer are...well... in your colon. Tumors for rectal cancer are .... well.... in your rectum. You will never pass gas the same way. Having lower back pain is part of aging and may be due to activities you have done; bending, lifting, etc. Also, getting constipated is a fact of life. But if you are truly concerned then why are you on answers instead of at your family physician? You want to worry about something worry about all the poverty, famine and war in this world.
2 :
I have to agree with what Palmyrafan says. Except her last sentence which was kind of lame.
3 :
I am so fed up of hearing people worry and panic about cancer just because they have a pain or ache somewhere. If your so scared, go and see a doctor. We cannot help you. But your symptoms do not sound like the symptoms associated with colorectal cancer. Nevertheless, go and see your doctor.

Sorry to hear about your uncle that is devastating news for anyone. My mom just passed away from cancer she too had colon with metastasis to the liver lung and spleen. Depending on how much of the liver is involved. If the liver is not bad and he responds to treatment his chances are good. But only God knows for sure. Best of Luck.

Colon cancer questions. IMPORTANT

Colon cancer questions. IMPORTANT?
ok my mom was hesitant to tell me, but she said she has to go to the hospital to get checked for colon cancer.she also says she deffinately doesnt have it, but it runs in her family and she's had a few symptoms for a while so they want to check.. 1. do you think she has it? 2. what are the chances of some one getting colon cancer when they have a family history of it? 3. how long does it take a doctor to get the results? PLEASE ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

The exam for colon cancer is typically a colonoscopy. During the procedure they will look with a camera at the inside of the colon and take biopsies if they see any bumps. Those bumps will be sent to a Pathologist for evaluation which takes at minimum 2 days to process but could take more depending on the hospital. They can be benign (not cancer) or precancerous (adenoma) or cancer (carcinoma). A family history of colon cancer puts her and you at a higher risk of getting colon cancer then the general population, however by getting screened early (like your mom is doing) it can be caught and treated before it becomes too serious or spreads. There is no way to know if your mom has cancer without the testing described above. You should let her know you are concerned and talk to her about it when she gets back. (she may be groggy from the medicine they gave her at the procedure).
2 :
I don't know your mother, so I don't know whether she has it. A family history doesn't necessarily mean you have it, and vice versa. I met with an oncologist Tuesday (I have it, but no family history), and he said only about 20% of the people who have it have a family history. If she's going in for a colonoscopy, they will be able to tell for sure if she has colon cancer. They will remove any polyps they find, and they can test them to see if they are cancerous or pre-cancerous. The tests results should be back in 2-3 days (my doctor "bullied" them into giving him the results the next day).
3 :
CANCER of COLON AND RECTUM: Symptoms:- 1. Change in ordinary bowel habits. 2. Change in appearance, size, and consistency of stool. 3. Bleeding on moving bowels. 4. Dark red blood in stools; tarry stools. 5. Increasing difficulty in moving bowels. 6. Distension of abdomen. 7.Abdominal cramps, often colicky. 8. Episodes of vomiting, sometimes of fecal material. 9. Unexplained anemia. 10. A lump in the abdomen (a late sign).
4 :
Colon cancer is not something inherited, it is connected to diet. See this article to verify. Don't worry about it. http://www.naturalnews.com/025974_cancer_health_colon_cancer.html
5 :
1, Impossible to tell, 2. If you have a family history of colon cancer, then, yes, you have a greater chance of getting it. 3. If the dr finds any tumors, a sample will be taken and sent to pathology for study If he finds something suspicious, he will be able to tell immediately if it MIGHT be cancer, but he won;t know for sure until the results come back from the lab ( 2-3 days) The procedure is painless, and takes maybe an hour. Afterwards, she will be somewhat tired for the rest of the day, but she will be fine. The procedure is very common, and , my surgeon does about 500 of them a year. Let me tell you something about myself. My father had cancer, and a surgeon I talked to practially insisted I get checked for colon cancer. The dr did find several polyps, which he cut out. Thse polyps would have developed into cancer if they would have been left go, but while he was in there, he cut them out. When he found them, they weere still harmless polyps, but given time, they would have developed into cancer. Hey, relax! Quit worrying !!!.
