Any survivors of colon cancer

Any survivors of colon cancer?
I recently found out that a very close relative of mine has colon cancer. Is there anyone who has survived cancer that would like to share their story? It is a very scary time, and any positive outcomes regarding cancer could help uplift his mood. Thanks! i appreciate those who have answered so far. what can a family do to help someone with cancer?

my dad had this a little over a year ago. the doctor said its one of the best places to have cancer if youre going to have it. they just remove a section of the colon where the cancer is located, usually its just a few inches. in my dads case, 6 inches. the hospital and surgery is the scary part, but if all goes well, then he'll be just fine

sorry but all i know, is that colon is the largest part of ur large intestine

After three months of symptoms very much like those of irritable bowel syndrome, and one month of significantly more discomfort, I was diagnosed with colon cancer following a colonoscopy. (The occult blood test and barium enema did not pick it up.) The rather large tumor was removed, along with half my large intestine, about a foot of the small one, and the lymph nodes outside the intestine near the tumor's location. The surgeon just connected the two cut ends together, so there's no colostomy bag to worry about. The cancer turned out to be Stage II, in which the cancer cells had invaded the intestinal wall and the muscles surrounding it, but had not gone any further. There was no cancer in the lymph nodes. This was the same type of cancer that President Ronald Reagan had, and he survived for many years after surgery. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy for this stage of colon cancer are unnecessary - Reagan didn't have either. (Stage III is a different matter.) One year later, my CEA (carcino-embryonic antigen) test result is at the low end of the normal range, so at this time, I am cancer-free. I will have to have regular CEA tests and colonoscopy checkups for a few more years in order to be called a "cancer survivor".

Cancer is enough to scare the daylights out of anybody. Remember 911, well, for my wife it was 917, the day she got a call from a doctor, who said " you have to see a surgeon right away".To make along story short, she did have a rough time, but now she's fine! She found a surgeon who was very assuring and very capable, and he would by my choice if I ever needed a surgeon. We were both scared, but the surgeon held both our hands and said, " I'll get you through this." Our surgeon's partner had cancer, so he knew... Be there for your relative, remember many have had it, many will have it, and many made it through and are now just fine. Take care of yourself, he has a whole hospital to take care of him.

My brother in law had colon cancer 4 years ago and he had a section of his colon removed. He's been fine ever since. I know a lot of people, including myself, who used natural supplements and got over all types of cancer. Lung cancer, liver cancer, pancreas cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer, brain tumor and bone cancer. They all got better!

People who have been treated for colon cancer can substantially reduce the risk that the disease will return and improve their overall chance of survival by engaging in regular exercise, according to new research by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute scientists. In a pair of studies published on the Journal of Clinical Oncology website http://www.jco.org/early_release/, and slated to appear in the journal's Aug. 1 issue, the researchers found that colon cancer patients engaging in moderate levels of exercise six to 12 months after completing therapy had an approximately 50 percent higher survival rate than those who didn't exercise. The improvement took place in patients with very early and more advanced (but non-spreading) colon cancer, all of whom had undergone surgery intended to cure the disease.

I'm so sorry. I watched a cancer movie today. Hopefully he'll be good. Good luck. :(
2 :
Going on the best statistics available, his chances are either 68.4% or 10.8%, which one it is depends on whether the Liver is local to the colon. If it is, it's 68.4%, if not it's 10.8%. These percentages are his chances of living for the next 5 years.

AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY AND ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE > IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY . > Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins: > > 1.. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few > billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are > unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size. > 2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime. > 3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumours. > 4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, > food and lifestyle factors. > 5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system. > 6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, > gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc. > 7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs. > 8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not > result in more tumor destruction. > 9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence > the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications. > 10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer > cells to spread to other sites. > 11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply. > > WHAT CANCER CELLS FEED ON: > a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like > NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses > but only in very sma ll amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt. > b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and > substituting with unsweetened soy milk, cancer cells are being starved. > c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than > beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer. > d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline > environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach > down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to no urish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try > and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at > temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). > e.. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. > Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it. > > 12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup. > 13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells. > 14.. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc..) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.. > 15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. L

If able to you need to talk to your father's doctors and ask them about his prognosis. Does you father know what is prognosis is? I would ignore the three previous answer as the first two did not really answer anything and the "Cancer Update from John Hopkins" is a hoax. Hope all goes well.
5 :
This does not sound good - early detection is the key here . But you better talk to his oncologist .
6 :
Whatever the chances are you can still get lucky. Just live your live and ignore statistics.
7 :
Robb, my colleague, is so right. Tim has to stop posting those statistics about John Hopkins. Tim THEY ARE A HOAX, People think because the name John Hopkins is attached to an article then it's got to be true, but it's not. Listen, just because the liver is involved doesn't mean he can't live longer. If they can do surgery and remove the diseased part successfully, then that's good because the liver is the only organ in the body that can reproduce itself. I'm really sorry to hear about his cancer but I'm one who never gives up ever. I believe and have a lot of faith. First, you have to find out if his Dr have any intentions of doing surgery. I hope they can, if they can't, I'm sure they will tell you why. All the best for your dad. God bless you too.

My mom had colon cancer. And died of it a month ago. She was only 38. It doesn't matter how old you are. One symptom is bloody stool and it will hurt very bad. He needs to get a colonoscopy as soon as possible. My mom waited too long and the doctors told her she was crazy. Just because they couldn't find anything wrong with her. They waited so long it had already turned to stage 4. Witch is terminal. Good luck and God bless.
2 :
By the time a person has symptoms from colon cancer, the disease is likely to be advanced. Most people at age 31 who have abdominal symptoms do not have colon cancer, but it is possible. The abdominal symptoms are non-specific - and could be caused by many other non-malignant diseases. You cannot go by the symptoms. The only way to make the diagnosis is to look with colonoscopy or barium enema. Colonoscopy is preferable
3 :
Primarily, In my Limited Experience, a Blood Loss Anemia, With a Normal BUN. And a + Occult Blood Test. Confirmation By Colonoscopy and Biopsy.

There has been major break throughs in colon cancer treatments, but I am sorry to say that in your cousin's case it was diagnosed too late. survival could be prolonged up to 36 months (this is the median for colon cancer). and he could lead practically a normal life during this period, but I am afraid this is the extent of it
2 :
It can be deadly and yes the lymph nodes would be involved. However, most of your statement does not make sense. There is no stage 3 colon cancer, there is a 3A, 3B and 3C. Lymph nodes are involved in all of them and the 5-year survival rate ranges from 80-50%. It is very unusual for chemo and radiation to be done at the same time and the tumor should have been removed so the cancer should not be causing her pain.
