Colon cancer affects the large intestine in the body.Large intestine is the terminal portion of the intestine and consists 6 parts the caecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon and sigmoid colon and rectum. colon cancer can affect any of the above mentioned parts and the symptoms differ depending upon the location of the cancer. Some of the common symptoms associated with colon cancer are blood in stools, difficulty in passing stools, pencil shaped stools, feeling of incomplete emptying of the bowel (tenesmus) after passing stools. Most of the times the bleeding is not visible and is referred to as occult bleeding and this leads to anemia. So an elderly person with unexplained anaemia should undergo complete radiographic examination to rule out colon cancer.

Colon cancer can affect the entire body if it goes undetected once it gets into the blood stream.
