Colon cancer can have many symptoms. However, in the early stages, people with colon cancer often have no symptoms at all. This is why people should know how colon cancer spread and regular screening beginning at 50 is an important investment in your healthy future. 1. A change in bowel habits 2. Diarrhea, constipation or feeling that the bowel does not empty completely 3. Blood, either bright red or very dark in the stool 4. Stools that are narrower than usual 5. General abdominal discomfort such as frequent gas pains, bloating, fullness or cramps 6. Weight loss with no known reason 7. Constant tiredness 8. Vomiting

Though bright blood can be one symptom, it's not the only one, and it's not necessarily cancer. The brighter the blood, the further down the colon or rectum it could be. For example, it could be hemorrhoids, it could be a polyp, gastrointeritis, irritable bowel syndrom, etc. The younger he is, the less likely it's colon cancer--it usually doesn't occur until you're at least 40, though it can happen earlier. If he's concerned, though, he should see a gastrointerologist and have a colonoscopy done. That's the only way to know for sure.
