There is a hereditary risk factor in colon cancer, especially in cases of close relatives having it before age 55. This is a statistic from wikipedia, perhpaps not totally accurate, but I did study colorectal cancer at med school last year and there is a genetic factor involved. You may want to see your doctor for a check - it will most likely be a colonoscopy they perform. Don't take on fully the advice of yahoo answers- the only truly helpful person to see is a doctor. I hope everything goes well for you, and that I could be of some help. You might want to check out the wikipedia page on colon cancer for some info, but i would say you should definitely see a doctor.

Sorry you lost your mother to cancer. Like other cancers, colon cancer is rarely hereditary; fewer than 5% of cases of colon cancer are due to a high-risk inherited gene defect. Where it is hereditary there is usually a strong family history of colon cancer - several relatives diagnosed with it, especially if they are from different generations of the family, or one or more relatives diagnosed at a young age. There are two rare inherited conditions that increase colon cancer risk too. This link from Cancer Research UK explains http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=3748#famhist

It can be, or someone who has no close relatives with it can get it. You have to be careful. You don't say how old you are. The best thing would be see a Gastroenterologist (Specialist on the Digestive system) and have a 'screening colonoscopy'. If there is anything wrong, it will detect it, but otherwise will give the Doctor an idea of what your system is like when it is normal. Just keep screened. But don't worry about it. Many people with close family members who have it never get anything and as I say, others-at least to their knowledge-don't have anybody with it and they get it. So be checked to be sure.
