Fiber, fiber, fiber!
2 :
increase fiber, dont eat meat, increase folic acid intake. You cant PREVENT it. You can DECREASE YOUR RISK OF colon cancer.
3 :
Have a regular colonoscopy if it runs in your family. Eat lots of fibre, bright coloured fruits and veggies, eat anti-oxidant foods. Drink plenty of fluids and make sure that you have a healthy bowel.
4 :
Sorry, but can't prevent colon cancer! there are many unknown factors that cause colon cancer,(i.e.tobacco,obesity,genetics,etc) One can live a very healthy lifestyle and still get colon cancer. No matter what your lifestyle is, there's no guarantees in medicine.
5 :
Eat lots and lots of foods rich in fiber. Cut down very signigicantly on food that contains bad fats: beef, pork, sausages, butter, transfats, etc.... Increase intake of lowfat milk, no more than 1 percent fat. Jump rope, jog, or walk briskly for 30 minutes every day. Take a good multiple vitamin daily. Here is a list of fiber content of foods: http://tinyurl.com/67bg5

Not sure. But here is some encouraging latest news: US scientists crack entire genetic code of breast and colon cancers Research on cancer and the genetic code looks like it may at long last produce real breakthroughs For more info, visit: http://www.librarynews.info/ http://www.medical-research-study-directory.info/medical-research-study-directory/ http://www.medical-research-study-directory.info/ http://www.lasik-surgery-san-diego.info/ http://www.san-diego-dentist.us http://www.san-diego-plastic-surgery-cosmetic-surgery-doctors.us/ http://www.acne-treatment-medicine-1.info/

Preventionmeassures for colorectal cancer - Most colorectal cancers should be preventable, through increased surveillance, improved lifestyle, and, probably, the use of dietary chemopreventive agents. Surveillance Most colorectal cancer arise from adenomatous polyps. These lesions can be detected and removed during colonoscopy. Studies show this procedure would decrease by > 80% the risk of cancer death, provided it is started by the age of 50, and repeated every 5 or 10 years. As per current guidelines under National Comprehensive Cancer Network at [www.NCCN.org], in average risk individuals with negative family history of colon cancer and personal history negative for adenomas or Inflammatory Bowel diseases, flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years with fecal occult blood testing annually or double contrast barium enema are other options acceptable for screening rather than colonoscopy every 10 years (which is currently the Gold-Standard of care). Lifestyle The comparison of colorectal cancer incidence in various countries strongly suggests that sedentarity, overeating (i.e., high caloric intake), and perhaps a diet high in meat (red or processed) could increase the risk of colorectal cancer. In contrast, physical exercise, and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables would decrease cancer risk, probably because they contain protective phytochemicals. Eating whole apples, including the skin, offers some anticancer benefits.Accordingly, lifestyle changes could decrease the risk of colorectal cancer as much as 60-80%. Chemoprevention More than 200 agents, including the above cited phytochemicals, and other food components like calcium or folic acid (a B vitamin), and NSAIDs like aspirin, are able to decrease carcinogenesis in preclinical models: Some studies show full inhibition of carcinogen-induced tumours in the colon of rats. Other studies show strong inhibition of spontaneous intestinal polyps in mutated mice (Min mice). Chemoprevention clinical trials in human volunteers have shown smaller prevention, but few intervention studies have been completed today. Calcium and aspirin supplements, given for 3 to 5 years after the removal of a polyp, modestly decreased the recurrence of polyps in volunteers (by 15-20%). The "chemoprevention database"shows the results of all published scientific studies of chemopreventive agents, in people and in animals.-

Am I worrying too much about colon cancer

Am I worrying too much about colon cancer?
Over the past 4 months, I've had a range of different bowel movements. Some have been fat and roundish; others have been thin and flat. Would I be seeing that range if you had colon cancer. I normally #### at once a day... Abdominal distension: Nope Abdominal pain: Nope Unexplained, persistent nausea or vomiting: Nope Unexplained weight loss: Nope Change in frequency or character of stool (bowel movements): nope Small-caliber (narrow) or ribbon-like stools: I dont' think so? Sensation of incomplete evacuation after a bowel movement: Nope Rectal pain: Nope Age. About 90 percent of people diagnosed with colon cancer are older than 50: I'm 20. A personal history of colorectal cancer or polyps: Not that I know of. Inflammatory intestinal conditions: Nope Inherited disorders that affect the colon: I might have hemmorides, thouh it usually doesn't cause a problem for me. Basiclly it's not active most of the time. Family history of colon cancer and colon polyps: Only my grandma, nobody else even polyps. My parents who are over 50 both got colonoscapes, neither one of them had any polyps. Diet. Colon cancer and rectal cancer may be associated with a diet low in fiber and high in fat and calories: Probably A sedentary lifestyle: Yeah, but do try to get at least a little bit of exercise each day. Diabetes: Nope Obesity: I'm only 135 pounds Smoking. I don't smoke Alcohol: I don't drink Growth hormone disorder: I don't think so. Radiation therapy for cancer: I've never had cancer or anyone in my family except for my granda who was a smoker. Is it just my OCD doing this to me?

Does dicyclomine tablets or Psyllium Powder cause colon cancer

Does dicyclomine tablets or Psyllium Powder cause colon cancer ?
also is Psyllium a laxative? Please explain
Women's Health - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Dicyclomine HCL is prescribed for Irritable Bowel Syndrome that acts on nerve receptors to block Acetylcholine and the associated stimulation of the GI tract. Pysllium is a plant based fiber that forms bulk that stimulates GI motility and acts as a laxative. Psyllium isn't absorbed and thus has no systemic effects. Neither has any indication of causing cancer. Both do work on the GI tract, but in opposite ways.

What is the life expectancy of someone with stage 4 colon cancer that has gone to the liver and lung

What is the life expectancy of someone with stage 4 colon cancer that has gone to the liver and lung?

I would say probably less than a year.
2 :
Patients with stage IV cancer hve a uniformly poor prognosis, living on average less than one year after diagnosis.
3 :
Stage IV cancer is no longer the death sentence that it once was. There is treatment but there are no guarantees. The truth is that no one knows, not even the doctors, the life expectancy of these patients. Much will depend on the patients overalll health, age, and response to treatment. The goal will be to gain control of the disease and hopefully place the patient into remission. If that is not possible, than it may be possible to find a treatment to keep the cancer under control and live with the cancer (much the way a diabetic lives with diabetes by taking insulin). The patient needs to find out as much as possible about the disease. Find out the treatment options. Go to a designated comprehensive cancer center for the best possible treatment. Cancer that has gone to the liver and lung can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, radiofrequency ablation, chemoperfusion . . there is treatment but the patient has to be willing to fight for it. NCCN: Clinical Guidelines for Colon Cancer http://www.nccn.org/professionals/physician_gls/PDF/colon.pdf NCI: Colon and Rectal Cancer http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/colon-and-rectal Peritoneal chemperfusion http://www.hillmancancercenter.org/surgonc/peritoneal_chemo.html Radiofrequency Ablation http://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/sitemap/modal-alias.cfm?modal=rf_ablation&bhcp=1 People Living with cancer http://www.plwc.org/portal/site/PLWC Depending on the patient than . . life expectancy may be far better than you expect.

My Mum was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer in May this year, when it was discovered it had already spread to liver and lung. She past away sept 7. It was extremely aggressive, and she was VERY ill constantly. There was minimal treatment given as it was 'too late' to do anything. I guess it depends on how the patient is and whether it is aggressive but i would say 6 months to a year max. I wish you all the best. It is a very cruel disease.
5 :
Honestly, it is probably 12-24 months depending upon how agressive the cancer is and how large the mets are.
6 :
It depends upon the person and how well your body can tolerate the meds. It is not necessarily a death sentence. There are many treatment options available. It is very important to get a good oncologist who is willing to fully fight this with every bit of technology and meds out there.

If Someone Has Diverticulitis, Are They More Susceptible To Colon Cancer

If Someone Has Diverticulitis, Are They More Susceptible To Colon Cancer?

1 :
Google it, my dear! That will Tell you a lot!!
2 :
no , they are two entirely different diseases with differing causes and effects. i know of three people (2 in their 80's)who have had diverticulitis for over 25 yrs. 2 of the 3 have had bowel sections. there is not and has ever been a cancer cell in sight.
3 :
Diverticulitis is an inflammation/infection that occur in the a diverticulum. The commonest cause of diverticulum(singular)/diverticulae(plural) formation in the colon of an elderly people is due to the degenerative ageing process. That part of the muscle wall become weak and they balloon out especially with constipation due to excessive pressure during bowel motion. These diverticulae form pockets or blind pouches on the wall of the colon. Sometimes feces which contain germs got stuck inside them and cause infection(diverticulitis). Colon cancer (the most common ones>90%) occur in the innermost cell lining of the colon called mucosa. Cancer occur when there are changes in the cell of the mucosa due to genetic alteration. The processes of diverticulitis and cancer formation are completely different and hence they are not related whatsoever.
4 :
From what I have read, there doesn't seem to be a connection. One common point among all the sources I have seen is that a high fiber diet may help avoid recurrences.

Which of these tests is the best to diagnose Colon Cancer

Which of these tests is the best to diagnose Colon Cancer?
MRI Cat- Scan Plain X-rays
Cancer - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
None of the above. Get a Colonoscopy, that's what they're for.
2 :
MRI
3 :
Catscan=X-rays, just lots of them But none of the tests you list are any help whatsoever in diagnosing colon cancer, to do that you need a colonoscopy followed by a biopsy on anything found that is "unusual" or unexpected...
4 :
First of all you need a medical history compatible with colon cancer, then you do a colonoscopy and biopsy any abnormalities.Dependent on the biopsy results you could do an mri to see if the cancer has spread.
5 :
Colonoscopy is the right test. It's no big deal. I've had three in my life.
6 :
Of the 3 tests you list - MRI is the most comprehensive. But colonscopy is BY FAR the best and most sensitive detection for colon cancer.
7 :
Colonoscopy. If there are any polyps in there, they are removed at the time the colonoscopy is being done. They are sent to a lab for biopsy, and you and the doctor will know for sure. The rest will show if something is there, but that's all it will do.

Questions about Colon Cancer

Questions about Colon Cancer?
What should you ask your doctor about Colon Cancer? My Aunt goes in to see the doctor and find out what stage of Colon Cancer she has, what questions should she ask to make sure everything is covered?
Cancer - 1 Answers

1 :
I was actually just diagnosed with colon cancer my self. some things you might want to ask about is what kind of chemo is she getting? what are the names of her chemo medicines and the side effects of each one?Is she going to need radiation and the side effects of that? make sure you ask how its going to effect her reproductive system, and her menstrual cycle. Chemo can also damage your bladder, so make sure you ask about long term side effects. There are always new questions to be thought of when she is not with her doctors so it would also be a good idea for her to keep a notepad, so she can write them down. And if you want to help her the best you can just try and keep her happy and laughing. That's what helps me the most. An illness like this in a family can be devastating, be strong to keep her strong. I wish the best of luck to you and yours!
