i'm 19 and have no history of colon cancer in my family, although my father does have ulcerative colitis which is now under control. for the past two weeks i've noticed streaks of blood on my stools sometimes, and what worries me is that my stools are sometimes thinner than usual... like they've been squeezed through an oval cookie cutter instead of a circular one. i've also been passing mucus before having a bowel movement. could i have colon cancer?

Blood streaks when passing a bowel movement are most commonly caused by a tiny tear in the lining from the hard stool or hemorrhoids. Diet changes and increased daily water can take care of both of these. You can go to WebMd and type in hemorrhoids and read up on this condition and it's treatment.

Probably not, BUT you need to see a doctor for some tests. If the blood is bright red, it is usually indicative of something like hemmorhoids. You may not be eating enough fiber which can cause thinner stools. Fiber bulks up your stool and softens it, if you drink plenty of water. Please see a doctor for some tests.

With your family Hx, I would ask the doctor to check you for UC.

I am not a dr, but I would have to guess you do not have colon cancer, I had some of the same things going on with myself and the thing that worked for me was a body/colon cleanse. Not only did it help with bowel movements, I regained my energy level, my skin never looked better, I just felt wonderful after using it. You can buy a cleanse on the net or at a local health food store. I used Dual Action got it on the net. Its not cheap but I use it every 6 months now, it works for me. Hope this helps ya!
