Gifting a massaging+ heating pad to grandma who is a colon cancer patient. Doctors/Nurses is this good gift?
I need replies from doctors/nurses, as I need to know if the massaging and heating pad won't harm her body. This pad can basically be used to massage back, legs, hands etc. The heat has on of settings also.

I think It's an incredibly thoughtful gift. I don't know how far advanced Grandma's cancer is, but I can tell you that if she has to lay down a lot, or if she's taking chemotherapy, anything that makes her more physically comfortable is a good thing. I'll keep her, and you in my prayers.

This sounds like a great gift, very thoughful, but think about your grandmothers cognitive ability, would she fall asleep on it? This can cause burns and skin darkening, due to the break down of red blood cells when exposed to heat for to long, You shouldn't use more then 15 to 20 minutes of heat at a time. What about a professional traveling masseuse that can visit her in her home. This isn't too expensive, about 30 dollars for 30 minutes or 50 for one hour, those are the rates in my area (upstate NY), they can compete with mortar and brick places because they don't have the overhead of a building. And the social aspect of seeing someone and talking to them is great for elderly people, but you should do this if your grandmother is okay with people touching her (she does not have to be naked) also is her skin intact and not tender? Call one up and find someone you trust (interview them, see if they have worked with geriatrics). It is really good for therapy for the body and soul.

Bad idea- impaired nerve senses make burns from heating pads very likely in an older person.

My father passed away from colon cancer. It is really hard to determine the stage from the information you have given. I can say, that colon cancer is very treatable. They Generally will remove that area of the colon. Sometimes there might be life changing things that your Father in law might have to make, or even live with a 'bag', but there is a chance they might be able to get the cancer. My prayers are with you.

I can't tell you if it is Stage 1 or not. However, it sounds like it was caught while still in early stages. Treatment of course varies w/how much the cancer has spread and where. I believe that he has a very good chance of beating this if he follows medical protocol. Good Luck and may he be cured soon!
3 :
It sounds as though this is an early stage and his chances should be good. He may even not need cemotherapy.
4 :
My colon cancer was stage 4 and had spread to my liver and cervix. That was in 2005 and I'm still alive and kicking so I think he'll be just fine. Keep the faith!

I'd say he is fortunate to have made it this long with stage 4 that has spread. Once it is in the liver, I never hear good news. I hope the clinical trial works for him!
2 :
Clinical trials are used to try out new medicines and treatments. The outcome really depends on whether the treatment is effective for this particular cancer and how his body reacts to it. Check out http://www.cancerdoubts.com It explains the factors that affect cancer treatment outcomes.

Does hypermetabolic activity in the colon imply cancer

Does hypermetabolic activity in the colon imply cancer?
Patient has Non-Hodgkins lymphoma and a recent PET scan showed the lymphoma had been successfully treated by Rituxin. Two areas of hyper metabolic activity were noted on the report in the colon and at the seigmiorectal junction. The measurements were 5SUV and 5.25 SUV.

If you have this much information you probably have the report and if the radiologist thought it was cancer they would say so. There are no SUV cut offs for malignancy and determining if something is malignant or not is not based on a single aspect of a test.

Could I possibly have colon cancer

Could I possibly have colon cancer?
I am pretty sure I have Iron deficiency anemia (a sympton of having colon cancer) then I get tired a lot. That is what iron deficiency does to you. Then sometimes there is blood in my stools. Could I really have colon cancer?

1 :
possible, however being that you must have seen a Dr to be diagnosed with anemia, seems if there was evidence or concern about colon cancer you would have had a colonoscopy
2 :
not necessarily but you would need a colonoscopy to be sure, that is when they put you to sleep and put a camera in you rectum to check for polyps and look at the tissue.
3 :
Blood in your stools can be caused by many other reasons besides colon cancer. Usually colon cancer will have other symptoms, such as change in bowel habits, weight loss, funny odor, and feeling your aren't empty after having a bowel movement. Blood in your stools can also be caused by hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, ulcers and anal fissures. All of those need a definitive diagnosis by a qualified physician. Having blood in your stools is nothing to brush off. Go get checked out, so you can stop worrying. GI procedures sound much worse than they really are.
4 :
If u were properly diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia ( among other things ur ferritin being low) and assuming u're a male, u need to be worked up for this GI bleed regardless of ur age. Many assumptions r made in this answer ( u having a regular diet, not having a heavy family history of colon ca, etc....)
5 :
You should get everything checked out with your doctor. If the symptoms really get serious or worst then i suggest that instead. I did some research on the symptoms and this is what i found. Here is the link my friend. http://coloncancer.about.com/od/cancerprevention/a/Cancer_Symptoms.htm

What is the cause of colon cancer and why western countries have such alarming rate of it

What is the cause of colon cancer and why western countries have such alarming rate of it?

Colon cancer is caused by fecal stagnation (i.e. incomplete elimination of bowels). The part of stool that doesn't come out gets stagnated. That fecal matter when stagnated for a long period of time causes polyp growth which lead to cancer. America has very high rate of colon cancer, because Americans eat too much and most obese in world. That means a very high rate of food is put into the intestines and for some people all that food isn't able to come out for whatever reason (intestinal overload or similar or even genetics), resulting in stagnation and then becoming colon cancer. The key to preventing colon cancer is to make sure you completely eliminate your bowels. They have dangerous toxins in them and if not eliminated completely, can lead to cancer. In short eat foods that digest and pass easily. Some foods are hard on intestines and it takes lot of effort to digest it -- red meat one of them. So some researchers said red meat causes colon cancer -- but its not true. It maybe hard to digest or take time to digest but it DOES DIGEST. Another theory which has been debunked is that eat more fiber to prevent colon cancer. This theory came into notice when it was discovered fecal stagnation causes colon cancer. They thought eating more fiber will eliminate the chance of fecal stagnation. Fiber only prevents constipation, i.e. it softens the stool. The stool still has to be passed by the intestines. And the stool not passing through intestines despite being passable is the cause of this cancer. Feeling of incomplete emptying is a major symptom and warning sign of CC In colon cancer, you may not be constipated and stool is soft and easy to pass but it still fails to pass. Thats why eating more fiber theory was debunked. In 3rd world countries they do not eat that much, so less stool is generated. With that fecal stagnation chance is severely reduced. Moreover, the foods they eat are mostly liquids and fruits that pass easy like papaya, banana, etc etc. Also give time for bowel movement. Don't get up too early from the seat. That means you're only doing half of it. If this becomes chronic habit it can lead to colon cancer. Personally i disagree that colon cancer is hereditary. I just don't find any logic in this statement. You are born with good intestines. If your intestines go bad, its not the fault of parent in any way. This is the most ridiculous medical hoax I have heard.

go ahead, give the mathematician 10 points....hes workd his ass off 4 it....hahhahahahah

No one knows what causes cancer – any cancer. Although colon cancer is rarely hereditary it can be and it has been proven. There are several hereditary types. Mortality and incidence rates have declined since their peak in the mid 1950s with a lifetime risk in the United States of about 5%. The l0owest incidence is in South America and Arab Israelis. People in third world countries die earlier than we do often from things eliminated here long ago and are not often old enough to get cancer. The short answer to your question is we don’t know, but it is thought to be environmental.
